Hello! I'm Joey.
I am an artist and an aspiring art teacher, currently working toward a Masters and Teaching License at the University of Minnesota. I live in Minneapolis.
I am originally from the Boston area, and got my undergraduate degree in Studio Art & Art History from Clark University in Worcester, MA. I graduated in 2014.
Since then, I've worked at:
Avalon Charter School - St. Paul, MN
New Morning Gallery - Asheville, NC
Black Mountain College Museum & Art Center - Asheville, NC
Caroline Mecklin Art Studio - St. Paul, MN
Minnesota Museum of American Art - St. Paul, MN
I like to think about art as a tool for critical thinking, or a way to examine identity, culture, and the human world. I make a lot of self portraits that pick apart my own life experiences, and I also like to examine the people, objects, and spaces the make up my daily life. I like to paint, sew, build, and draw.
As a teacher I hope to cultivate critical thinking through art projects and class discussions. I want to teach my students to pick apart the roles and rules in society. Check out my blog on this site to see some projects I've done towards this goal.
Thanks for checking my work out! Feel free to get in touch:
